April 6, 2012

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

The week of April 16, the Chicago City Council will vote on a precedent setting agreement for RCN, the first of three cable companies to renew its franchise in Chicago. The 10-year agreement ensures CAN TV’s independence and increases its future stability.

WHO BENEFITS? You do. CAN TV channels are the public’s channels.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT?

  • THANK your Alderman - 46 out of 50 Aldermen told RCN they would only support a franchise deal that supports the public. Urge them to vote YES on the RCN franchise renewal. (Find your Alderman here.)

  • JOIN US - at City Council Chambers, City Hall, 2nd floor, 121 N. LaSalle on:

Monday, April 16 at 10 a.m. (Finance Committee hearing)

    Wednesday,April 18 at 10 a.m. (City Council final vote)

WHAT ARE THE PARTIES SAYING?

“The renegotiation of our cable franchises ensures that the city and its cable providers work together to secure the future of PEG programming that benefits the City at large.”

Rosemary Krimbel

Commissioner of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP)

“We’re happy with the terms. It’s pretty fair.”

Tom McKay

General Manager, RCN Chicago

as reported in Windy City Times

"This franchise renewal does right by the public, providing technical parity for the public’s channels and funding support that grows as cable grows."

Barbara Popovic

Executive Director, CAN TV

Also being considered at the April meetings is an amended Cable Ordinance, which is the legal document that governs all cable companies in Chicago . The City plans to remove the Cable Commission and direct all future cable complaints and concerns to the Commissioner of BACP.
