TAPE SUBMISSIONS
Any individual over 18 years of age with a Chicago
residential address or a person representing a nonprofit
organization or institution with a Chicago street address
can submit programming to CAN TV free of charge.
To receive a Submission Packet with details how to
submit programming to CAN TV, e-mail your mailing address to Info@cantv.org or call 312-738-1400.
The following
is a list of most frequently asked questions concerning
program submission. Please refer to the CAN
TV Users Manual for more complete information.
Who can submit programs?
Any individual with a Chicago residential address or
a person representing a nonprofit organization or
institution with a Chicago street address. You must
also be at least 18 years of age.
Is there a fee for submitting programs?
No, access to the channels is provided free of charge.
Are there any restrictions on program content?
Programs must not contain any of the following: gambling,
obscenity, solicitation of funds, advertising, promotion
of commercial products and/or services, misrepresentation
or illegalities such as libel, slander, defamation,
invasion of privacy or publicity rights, unfair competition
or copyright violation.
While CAN TV conducts business in English, you are welcome
to submit programs in any language.
How will my program be scheduled?
CAN TV reserves the right to schedule all programming.
Channel time is made available on a reasonable, nondiscriminatory
basis. Locally produced works take precedence over programs
produced outside of Chicago.
Submit all materials no later than the 10th of the month
prior to the month of cablecast. Scheduling is subject
to the availability of time slots and programs could
be scheduled in subsequent months. Notification of cablecast
dates will be given via telephone or mail.
Do I retain the rights to my program?
Yes, you retain full responsibility for, rights to and
ownership of your program. You are responsible for
securing any copyright, trademark rights or other intellectual
property rights.
How will cable subscribers know about my program?
Viewers can receive daily CAN TV program information
by watching the program guides on your cable channels.
As a resident of Chicago, how do I register to submit
my program?
1. Complete and sign the Channel Time User Agreement.
2. Bring a photo I.D. with your birthdate.
3. Bring a recently dated document with your current
Chicago residential address, such as a utility bill.
As a representative of a Chicago Nonprofit Organization,
how do I register to submit programs?
1. Complete and sign the Channel Time User Agreement.
2. Bring a photo I.D. with your birthdate.
3. Provide proof of current nonprofit status such as
a photocopy of a tax status letter issued by the
Internal Revenue Service or a State Charter.
4. Bring a letter of authorization from a senior management
official at the nonprofit on letterhead, giving you
authorization to submit programs on behalf of the organization.
5. Provide proof that the organization is located in
Chicago such as a recently dated utility bill.
Once registered, these forms and verifications do not
need to be done again until the resident or organization
moves or the representative of the organization changes.
To Submit a Taped Program
For each program, complete and sign a Program Scheduling
Request Form. Include a subtitle or episode number.
The information on the form must match the information
on the tape. We recommend that you make photocopies
of the Program Scheduling Request Form so that you
have them readily available for additional programs
you may wish to submit, now or in the future. Be sure
to copy both the front and back pages.
In person, bring the Channel Time User Agreement, Program
Scheduling Request Form(s), photocopies of the verification
documents and tape(s) to our offices at 322 South Green
Street from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
How long can a program be?
CAN TV accepts any length program though standard lengths
are 29:00 minutes or 59:00 minutes.
What are the technical requirements?
- Submit programs on DVCam (large cassette only)
tape stock.
- The tape must have contiguous* time code
from the very start of the reel past the end of your
program.
- Only one (1) program per tape.
- Before the beginning
of your program, include 1:00 minute of leader consisting
of black video.
- At the end of your program :30 seconds
of black video is required.
- Do not record in “long
play” (LP).
- Digital audio levels should be between –20db
and –12db. Use only audio channels 1 & 2.
- Do
not use a face label (top) on your tapes.
Use the spine label only. Peel off old labels.
- Make
a safety copy of your program to submit to CAN TV.
Keep your original master tape.
- If you reuse DVCam
tapes you must bulk erase them first.
Please call Traffic at 312-738-2845 to make arrangements
to pick up your tapes within 30 days of its last cablecast
date. Allow at least 48 hours for Traffic to get your
tapes ready for pick-up. Please note that tapes left
at CAN TV beyond 30 days will be discarded at the discretion
of CAN TV.
NOTE: CAN TV is not responsible for erasure, damage
to or loss of videotapes. Further, it accepts no legal
responsibility for actions or events resulting from the
cablecast of submitted programs.
* Contiguous time code = consecutive electronic reference
numbers that move from lower to higher numbers without
any gaps or “breaks” in the sequence.
